The Client
A high profile organisation in the public sector asked us to help them improve their disciplinary procedures and investigations. They employed a highly skilled and predominantly male workforce, there was Trade Union recognition with significant membership levels. They benefited from a sophisticated but relatively small HR function.
The Problem
The organisation found itself having to react to and deal with a significant number of complaints of bullying and harassment.
The Trade Union representing both “accusers” and “accused” demanded strict adherence to agreed procedures and they asked for detailed investigations into each complaint.
The HR department found itself unable to cope with the additional workload this created and a number of line managers were appointed as Investigation Officers. None of the managers had any previous training or experience in this role.
What We Did
We designed and conducted a series of training activities which were designed to ensure that the Investigation Officers had a detailed knowledge of both employment law and their own organisation’s comprehensive policies and procedures.
We also trained them to use effective questioning techniques in their face to face interviews and how to collate, write and present their reports and findings. As there was the risk that some of the issues could be taken to the employment tribunal so the training and assessment of the Investigation Officers was to a very high standard.
The Results
The process is now established and the organisation is no longer under resourced. The need to employ external consultants has virtually been eliminated. < Back
